How to be a better footballer - Goalkeeper characteristics

The FA have introduced a new initiative to identify young female athletes who could or potentially play football for England. Discover My Talent are looking for players who are eligible to represent England. Our aim is to ensure we supply England teams with the quality, diversity and depth of players to enable England to win another major tournament. In pursuit of this ambition, we’re leaving no stone unturned when it comes to finding future talent across England (englandfootball.com). 

This blog gives you a list of playing characteristics England are looking for in young people, to help you develop your game to be a better footballer. 


1. Play forward - Can you play forward using your hands and feet? Can you distribute the ball effectively to your teammates with high efficiency? Can you become an extra player available on the field, supporting your defense when needed. 

2. Keep possession – An effective goalkeeper doesn't just stay in their own area or on their own touchline. Are you comfortable coming out of your six-yard box to act as another defender when the team is in possession. Are you happy to receive the ball back from players at your feet and then distribute it effectively to other areas of the field. 

3. Defends their goal Can you make big saves when needed? Can you communicate assertively, covering areas and getting into good positions to defend the area and space. Are you aware of your position and where the goal is at all times. Can you staying positive and supporting your defenders?

4. Physically fast and agile as well as being athletic, can you spring into action because you have good reaction timeCan you jump in the air and quickly get back up off the floor. Are you quick off your line? Can you secure the ball with your body? 


Regardless if you are England ready, work on these areas to help you become a better footballer.
